The Origin Story

The story behind the trail, and why we tell it the way we do.

A Note from Ron

Ron on a mountaintop in Slovenia

I'm Ron. Not a therapist. Not a clinician. Just a guy who, after a series of tests, went through open-heart surgery in February 2026. Despite my diligent month-long preparatory work pre-surgery, recovery was a little harder than I expected. While prepping and recovering, I looked around and thought: where are the other dudes who have been through this? I was fortunate to have a friend, Brian, who was exactly four weeks ahead of me on the trail. Comforting. Helpful. Reassuring.

I built Dude2Dude because I needed it, and it did not exist. Aside from my faith and my family, that which helped me most was not a pamphlet or a hotline. It was other men—dudes who prayed for me regularly. Good men. Good friends. Guys who made certain I had lunch and a walking buddy several times a week when I couldn't drive. They asked to join my recovery journey. Like most guys, I nearly let my pride convince me to decline their offers, but I quickly learned to say yes—and embrace their generosity. (All dudes could do better at this.)

This page is my attempt to explain what we built and why we built it the way we did. I hope it resonates. If you are reading this, you are probably somewhere on the trail yourself. If you're in The Cave at the moment, reach out to the other dudes, Trail Guides, or Trail Bosses in your community. You are not as alone as it might feel right now.

The Recovery Trail

Dude2Dude is built on Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey mythological framework -- the same arc behind Star Wars, The Lion King, and every Marvel film. You've felt it hundreds of times without knowing the name. When you name it, there's a moment of recognition: oh, that's what this is.

For men in recovery, naming the framework does one important thing: it reframes your story from failure narrative to hero narrative. You didn't lose control of your life. You got the Call. You crossed the Threshold. You might very well be in the Cave right now—and every hero who ever entered the Cave came back out changed.

We chose this framework deliberately because recovery is not a problem to be solved. It is a story being lived.

01

The Ordinary World

Life before everything changed. Maybe the surgery is scheduled and you're telling yourself it'll be fine. Maybe you just got the diagnosis. The world looks normal from the outside, but something underneath has shifted and you know it.

02

The Call

It comes differently for every guy. A night that scared you. A morning you could barely get out of bed. A doctor's face that told you more than his words did. Something cracked open, and ordinary life stopped being an option.

03

The Pushback

The part nobody talks about. The voice that says you don't really need help, that other guys have it worse, that you can figure this out on your own. Most men live here longer than they should. Pride is a hell of a hiking partner — and it will leave you lost.

04

The Trail Guide

Every hero gets a mentor. Luke had Obi-Wan. Frodo had Gandalf. On the Recovery Trail, your Trail Guide is a Dude2Dude buddy who has hiked this stretch before. He doesn't fix you. He just knows the terrain, and he shows up.

05

The Trailhead

The quiet decision. The moment you said, out loud or just to yourself: I need help, and I'm going to get it. You don't need to know what's ahead. You just need to take the first step.

06

The Miles

This is where you earn it. The weeks of showing up — good days and bad ones, allies who surprise you and obstacles you didn't see coming. You figure out what works. You figure out who shows up. You learn the terrain by walking it.

07

The Descent

Deeper in. The adrenaline of surgery has worn off and the real work sets in — physically, emotionally, all of it. You know the hardest stretch is still ahead. This is where most men quietly start to wonder if they're going to make it.

08

The Cave

Campbell called it the Ordeal. On the Recovery Trail, we call it 2am. The moment where doubt, fear, and exhaustion all arrive at once — and you have to decide who you are. Every guy on this trail hits The Cave. The ones who make it through don't try to walk it alone.

09

The Find

What you pick up coming out the other side. Practical tools. Other guys' stories. The thing a Trail Guide said that stuck with you. Not a magic cure — the accumulated wisdom of men who walked before you, freely given, now yours to carry.

10

The Long Walk Back

You're not in the woods anymore, but you're not home yet. Returning to work, to relationships, to a body that still surprises you. The road back is real and it takes time. You carry everything you earned, and you walk.

11

The Summit

The moment you realize you've changed. Not just that you survived — but that you're different. Stronger in ways that don't show on a scan. The final stretch that proves who you've become.

12

Base Camp

You made it back. Not unchanged — nobody comes back from a real trail unchanged. Base Camp is where you bring everything you learned and become someone else's Trail Guide. The trail keeps going. And you reach back for the guy behind you.
